Lighthouse by the Bay Appliqued Quilt

One the States in the USA that have a distinct feature is Maine. The state has so many fascinating Lighthouses around the coast. These light houses or we could all them seaside towers which date back to ancient Egypt and its civilisation. A 400-foot tall stone Lighthouse of Alexandria built in the 3rd century BC on the coast of Egypt could be one of the first lighthouses ever.
A lot of lighthouses were built in the 19th or 20th century on a much smaller scale, with a single beacon to light the way for ships around the coastal waters of the main shipping areas, and often, a small room or nearby cottage where the lighthouse keeper could sleep. The construction of these light houses tested the engineers of the day. Today the lighthouses have been automated so there is no need for a lighthouse keeper. Even though they have lost much of their relevance, many lighthouses still stand on beaches, and serve as beautiful symbols of a bygone era. I think they are a fascinating type of architecture to look at and in the state of Maine they are in evidence all over and worth going to see.
